Abstract

ABSTRACT
Scorpion envenomation (ES) is a relatively common accident in tropical and subtropical areas. However, triggering of a sickle cell vasoocclusive event (VOE) by scorpion envenomation has not been described in the literature. We report the case of a 40-year-old SS sickle cell patient from a rural area in Niger, victim of a scorpion bite that caused painful prolonged osteoarticular VOE. Treatment was based on conventional medical treatment supplemented by a transfusion exchange session. When faced with scorpionism on sickle cell anemia, the clinician must keep in mind the possibility of triggering an often prolonged VOE requiring the carrying out of a transfusion exchange.
