Abstract

Strabismus is an ophthalmic syndrome in which there is a misalignment of the ocular axes and primary or secondary sensory alterations to this deviation. This condition leads to three conflicts. The first is motor and characterized by the angle of deviation. The second is sensory and is defined by the triad: amblyopia, suppression and abnormal retinal correspondence. The third is psychosocial and is characterized by the impact of strabismus on the patient and his environnement. Despite the fact that present-day perception and management of strabismus are coherent; they have however fluctuated with time and civilizations. We narrate this changing history.
