Abstract

RÉSUMÉ
Introduction. Conclusion.

ABSTRACT
Introduction... The leaves of Spilanthes Africana are used in traditional medicine as an anaesthetic, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial, to soften the alveolar ligaments and to perform a dental extraction. This empirical use has enabled the present study the aim of which was to identify the active metabolites responsible for the properties that facilitate, allow and authorize dental extraction. Methods. The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tri-terpenes, sterols, heterosides, saponosides, tannins, coumarins and reducing sugars by Harborne JB (1998) phytochemical methods; which have anaesthetic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, syndesmotomic, haemostatic and astringent properties. The leaves of spilanthes africana showed no acute toxicity at 2000 and 5000 mg/kg and no subacute toxicity at 500, 1000, 2000 mg/kg. Lethal dose 50 was superior to 5000 mg/kg. Conclusion. The recognized local anaesthetic, haemostatic and syndesmotomic properties of Spilanthes africana justify its use by traditional healers for dental extraction.
