Abstract

Background
The aim of our study was to determine the prevalence of the HBs Ag among medical and pharmacy students at the University of Douala, Cameroon.
Methods
This was a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study involving students of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Douala, Cameroon. We included all regularly enrolled students who accepted to participate in our study. The samples were analyzed using both rapid and ELISA tests. Qualitative variables were compared using the Chi-squared test, the Fisher test and the Odds ratios.
Results
Samples from five hundred students were collected. The median age was 22 years, with a range from 16 to 31 years. The sex ratio was 1.36 in favor of females. The HBs antigen was positive for 28 students (5.6%). 88 students (17.6%) were vaccinated against hepatitis B whereas, 412 (82.4%) were unvaccinated. 8 students (4.45%), were tested for anti HBs antibodies to verify vaccine efficacy.
Conclusion
The prevalence of HBs Ag is at 5.6% among medical and pharmacy students in Douala.
