Abstract

Introduction. Cerebral palsy is defined as a set of movement and/or posture disorders and motor dysfunction due to a disorder, injury, or non-progressive anomaly in a developing brain. The aim of this study is to evaluate the psychosocial experience of parents of children with cerebral palsy. Methodology. This was a cross-sectional study conducted in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation departments of the Yopougon and Bouaké University Hospitals. One biological parent of the 1st degree and children of at least 2 years of age with cerebral palsy were included. We collected and analyzed clinical data for the children, and assessed the emotional impact on parents using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD) and the adapted Family Impact of Childhood Disability Scale (FICD). Results. The parents were primarily mothers. On the HAD scale, parents showed symptoms of anxiety in 21.21% of cases and depression in 12.12% of cases. The manifestation of anxiety was higher in parents whose child had severe motor impairment (p<0.05). On the adapted FICD scale, there was a greater religious faith (p<0.01) and an improvement in family solidarity (p<0.01) among Christian parents and members of the Akan ethnic group. Regardless of socio-religious background, there were no significant variations in social and economic distress. Conclusion. Cerebral palsy constitutes a major challenge in child health. Its care pathway requires taking into account families in their socio-cultural and economic reality
