Abstract
ABSTRACT
Introduction. Hearing loss, a disability with major educational and socio-economic impacts, remains poorly documented in Congo. This prospective study outlines prevalence and sociodemographic characteristics of medically confirmed hearing loss in Brazzaville. Methodology. A 6-month survey (October 2023-March 2024) enrolled deaf subjects of all ages using validated standardized questionnaires. Results. Among 2,638,000 inhabitants, 327 cases were identified (prevalence: 0.12%). Mean age was 17.5 years (range: 3-69), with marked pediatric predominance (48.6% ≤15 years). A slight male majority emerged (sex ratio 1.10). Tribal distribution showed Lari overrepresentation (57.2%), followed by Mbochi (15.9%). Geographically, Makelekele (17.1%) and Talangai (15.3%) districts had the highest burden. Educational attainment revealed stark inequities: 48.9% did not exceed primary level versus 38.5% reaching secondary education. No significant longevity difference was observed. Conclusion. This first Brazzaville quantification highlights concerning pediatric/tribal disparities. We recommend: (1) targeted screening in high-burden districts, (2) educational programs adapted for linguistic minorities, and (3) a national study on preventable etiologies.
RÉSUMÉ
Introduction. Conclusion.
