Abstract

Introduction.
Conclusion.

ABSTRACT
Introduction. In recent years, antibiotic susceptibility tests have revealed an alarming resistance of bacteria to several antibiotics to the point that, the quality of antibiotic-discs used for such tests could be questioned. The present study was undertaken to assess the performance of three brands of antibiotics-discs commonly used in bacteriology laboratories in Benin. Materials and methods. Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 were used. An investigation was conducted on the use of these discs in 10 laboratories of medical bacteriology in south Benin. Results. The study revealed that the antibiotic-discs of “BIORAD, BIOGRAM and HIMEDIA” are the most used in laboratories of Benin. The most used antibiotics in the diagnosis of Escherichia coli infection were Amoxicillin+Acid clavulanic, Ceftriaxone, Gentamycin, Cefotaxime and Ciprofloxacin. The study also showed that Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 was resistant to nearly all tested antibiotics of the three brands, which is contrary to the normal profile of the strain. This situation demonstrates the poor quality of antibiotics-discs used and may lead to treatment failures and the creation of emerging resistant strains. Conclusion. The results of present study encourage the fulfillment of other studies, at national and international level on the topic; in order to take into account more antibiotics for a full interpretation of the situation.
