Abstract

Introduction. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the leading cause of cervical cancer, the incidence and mortality rates of which remain high in sub-Saharan Africa despite the availability of an effective vaccine. This review aimed to analyse the determinants of HPV vaccination coverage among adolescent girls in sub-Saharan Africa. Materials and Methods. A narrative review of the literature was conducted using the PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, Embase and African Journals Online databases. Ten articles were selected following the screening process. Results. HPV vaccination coverage remains low and inconsistent among adolescent girls in sub-Saharan Africa. The main determinants identified are: knowledge and attitudes towards HPV, parental support and education, exposure to information, household socio-economic status, the influence of social norms, and recommendations from healthcare workers. Conclusion. The results highlight the need for integrated approaches combining educational, community-based and organisational interventions to improve HPV vaccination coverage with a view to achieving the objectives of cervical cancer elimination.
