ABSTRACT
Conclusion.

Aim. To describe the clinical pattern, the causes and the outcome of patients with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding in the National Reference General Hospital of N’Djamena. Patients and Methods. This was a cross sectional descriptive study carried out over a period of four years, including all patients recovered for an upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Data were collected using a sheet inspired from the “Upper gastrointestinal bleeding Observatory in Africa French-speaking Area”. Study variables included demographic data, clinical presentation, hemoglobin rate, endoscopic findings, and the issue of patient. Results. The files of one hundred fifteen patients were analyzed. 78% of them were male. Their mean age was 47 years. Hematemesis was the most frequent form of bleeding (70, 43%). Hemoglobin rate was less than 7 g/dl in 30% of cases. Gastroduodenal ulcer disease was the most common cause of bleeding. The use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) was identified in 7% of cases. Overall mortality rate was 18%. Conclusion. In Ndjamena, upper gastrointestinal bleeding usually presents as hematemesis. gastro duodenal ulcer disease is the most common cause. The overall mortality rate is high.
