Conclusion.
Objective. Infections are the first cause of morbidity and the second cause of mortality in hemodialysis patients. Nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus plays a major role in the occurrence of these infections. The objective of our study was to determine the prevalence of nasal portage in hemodialysis patients and centre staff. Patients and methods. This was a 2-month cross-sectional prospective study from February 1 to April 30, 2020 in the hemodialysis centre of the Ziguinchor regional hospital. The search for Staphylococcus aureus in the nasal area was carried out in all chronic haemodialysis patients, their carers and nursing staff. The swab was introduced into the nostrils of the patients to a depth of at least 1 cm using rotational movements. After incubation, strain isolation was performed on selective Chapman medium and bacterial colonies were identified by morphology, hydrogen peroxide enzyme test, pathogenicity tests and latex test. Results. Of the 41 swabs taken, 9 had isolated Staphylococcus aureus, a prevalence of 21.95%. Of the 9 cases, 5 were chronic hemodialysis cases. The mean age of the detected cases was 34.66 +/- 12.32 years. The average length of time on dialysis was 29.44 months. Three germs (33.33%) were meti-R. Conclusion. Dialysis catheters are gateways for infections in hemodialysis patients with nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus.
